Her Idea of Bad

Last weekend we were all in the car coming back from somewhere.  Don't ask me-I can't remember those details.  Anyway, we passed by a billboard for that new movie Tammy coming out in a couple weeks.  Melissa McCarthy plays the main character-I'm assuming Tammy.  Georgia read the name of the movie out loud as we drove by, and Andy kind of scoffed at the movie.  He said something about her being okay in small doses like in Bridesmaids, but that she's not good a lot of the time.  Meaning-she does the same thing over and over again and to carry a whole film and then multiple films playing the same character just gets old.  I can't say I disagree with him.  However, from the back seat all Lana heard him say was that she wasn't good.  Lana was quick to qualify what he meant by "not good."

"You mean like she smokes?" She asked him.

"No, Lana.  I...." Andy didn't have time to answer because Lana jumped in with.

"Ooooh, like she kills people," she said.

"No. Lana.  She..." and then we started laughing.  Because really my daughter's idea of someone who is not good is either they smoke, or they kill people.  The jump from one to the other is what I found most amusing.  Eventually we explained that he meant she wasn't good in the movie, but I'm pretty certain she still thinks Melissa McCarthy smokes while killing people.  Sorry Melissa.

Teary Eyed

Saturday Andy and I took the girls to see "The Lorax".  Normally, Sonya has baseball on Saturdays, but it was a very rainy day here in Los Angeles, which we needed badly.  So all games were cancelled and we took the opportunity to go to the movies instead.  Lana fared better this time.  There were only a few times she hid her eyes and asked when it was going to be over.  She will like going to the movies yet, dammit!

I thought the movie was good and the message behind it, which is of course the message of the book, is one that I knew would make me a bit emotional.  I get weepy at movies and TV very easily.  I always have, but it seems to have gotten worse since I had the girls.

Toward the end of the movie I could feel myself choking up.  Then I started to get teary eyed, when the last tree was cut down and the Lorax left.  (Sorry if I spoiled it, but it's in the book people!)  Just as I was trying not to cry I heard a sniff come from my right and I looked over to see Sonya completely in tears.  She was close to sobbing by the end.  Once I saw this there was  no way to keep my own tears from flowing.  She and I cried through the last ten minutes of the movie.  It appears I have passed on that sappy, overemotional, crying at movie gene to her.  I'm sure she'll feel just as stupid one day when she finds herself crying over a telephone or dog food commercial.  It's okay, though.  It happens to the best of us!

For the Duran Duran Fans

I totally forgot about telling you all this story.  Then when I was trying to think about what to write about today, it popped in my head.  So even if it's a month old, it's still a good one.

My neighbor across the street, Kelly, has helped me out with the girls A LOT over the past couple years.  She was out of work, unfortunately for her, but it meant I had a daytime babysitter  from time to time.  Great for me!  Just recently she got a job, which she was very happy about, no so great for me.  I guess I forgot to tell her that it's all about me my needs.  I mean does she really NEED to work?  Who needs food and shelter EVERY day.  So overrated.  Seriously, I'm very happy for her, but it does kinda suck that I don't have a go to person to watch the girls last minute, if needed.  Oh well.  Sonya's old enough to babysit, right?  Anyway-since Kelly would watch Lana and Georgia sometimes during the day, Sonya was feeling left out.  She loves Kelly and wanted to spend time with her, but with school and everything else she had going on, there wasn't much time.  Kelly decided she wanted to take Sonya out to lunch and a movie one weekend, so they could hang out together. This, of course thrilled Sonya to no end.  So, one Saturday last month, Kelly took her to see the movie Rio.

The morning of their day out, the five of us were all at the breakfast table talking about our upcoming events for the day.  Sonya started saying how she was so excited to go out to lunch and see the movie, but then she wasn't sure what this movie was about?  My girls don't watch too many, if any, TV commercials.  Therefore, they don't really see what movies are coming out, except when we drive by a poster now and then.

"But mom what is the movie about?  I think I saw a bird or something on the picture," she told us.

Andy told her, "I think it's about a bird that can't fly."

So thinking I'm funny, because of course I am, I said, "Really?  I thought it was about a bird that dances on the sand."

Now those of you who are Duran Duran fans out there just got that.  Those of you who are not, like my husband, have no idea why I thought that was funny.  Andy gave me a weird look, so I sang,

"You know 'her name is Rio and she dances on the saaaannndd!'"

THEN he got it.  But since I had to explain it, it turned out not to be so funny for him.  Sonya was clueless about what we were talking about.  I hate when my jokes go to waste.

Fast forward to the next day.  I had come back from my night away with my friend BethAnnDoddKoehn, and I was talking to the girls about how their day was on Saturday.  I said to Sonya,

"How was your time out with Kelly? Oh and how was the movie?!"

She told me, "Great! But mom, dad was right and you were wrong."

Huh?  "About what?" I asked.

"The movie," she replied.  "It WAS about a bird who couldn't fly, not one who dances on the sand."

Too bad Glee hasn't done a Duran Duran episode yet, then I wouldn't have had to explain myself.

Preparing To Be Scared

Yesterday I had to take all three girls to the dermatologist for various different reasons.  Nothing serious, but they just all had some kind of skin rash here or itchy scalp there.  Our pediatrician had given me a referral to a dermatologist to get a more specified opinion on what was going on with their skin.

When we got to the office,  I was given paperwork to fill out on ALL THREE girls.  We were new to this particular office so they needed all the information you usually fill out when you go to a doctor for the first time.  Times three.  Yeah, that took a while.

The girls were actually behaving fairly well, thankfully. Then I noticed why. I looked up to see a TV mounted on the wall and playing on it was Pirates of the Caribbean.  Don't ask me which one, because I think I've only seen the first two, and those only once.  Not to mention the part of the movie they were watching there was nothing but fighting going on.  Wait-isn't that pretty much the whole movie?  Whatever.

The girls had their eyes glued to the screen.  Having watched not much more than Mickey Mouse and Sesame Street at this point in their lives, they were intrigued.  They have seen Star Wars, but even that is not as shoot 'em up as Pirates.  I looked over at Georgia and she was obviously a little uncomfortable.  I asked if she was scared and she told me yes.  I asked Lana if she was scared and she said she was fine.  I reminded them all that this was pretend and these were just actors telling a story.  Nobody was really getting shot or dying.  Then I looked at Sonya who was going back and forth between trying to concentrate on her coloring and being captured by what was going on in the movie.  She is the one who was afraid of watching movies for so long.  She is the one who will probably never watch a scary movie in her life, at least not on purpose.  So I said to her,

"Sonya, you okay?  Are you scared?"

She looked over at me and said, "No, I'm fine."

Then after a pause she said very matter of fact, "I'll just have nightmares tonight."

Oh, well as long as you're not scared NOW.
